Notes

1 e.g., Hegel writes: “But Socrates did not grow like a mushroom out of the earth, for he stands in continuity with his time, and thus is not only a most important figure in the history of Philosophy – perhaps the most interesting in the philosophy of antiquity – but is also a world-famed personage” (Hegel 1968: 384).

2 Vlastos characterizes the “Socratic problem,” the problem of establishing whether the Socrates portrayed in the Platonic dialogues is the real historical Socrates or a Platonic fiction, as “the bugbear of Platonic studies.” The question “Who are you talking about – Socrates or a ‘Socrates’ in Plato?” will dog your steps, barking at you, forcing you to turn and face it in self-defense. If you do mean the former, you must argue for it. You must give reasons for the claim that through a “Socrates” in Plato we can come to know the Socrates of history – the Socrates who made history, taught Plato and others, changed their thinking and their lives, and through them changed the course of Western thought.

(Vlastos 1991: 45)
